After of the Second World War, the Balkan states which were made up of of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia and Macedonia became part of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. In the country of Yugoslavia, there were three different ethnic groups that made up the population. There was the Bosnian Serbs who were orthodox catholics. The Bosniaks who have a religion of muslim. And lastly the Croats who were roman catholic. All three ethnic groups were very diversed and had different opinions. In reality they all didn't get along. However their communist president Josip Broz Tito was the glue that kept the nation together. He was known as a great leader who brought peace and prosparity to Yugoslavia. In 1980, Tito died and everything fell apart. Ten years later the country desended into what is said to be one of the worst conflicts since the second world war. With ethnic tensions on the rise the need for a new leader. Slobdan Milosevic began to rise in Serbia and became Serbia's president in 1988. He encouraged Serb nationalism in other places such as Bosnia. He had a vision of an all Serb Bosnia and in many ways fuled the fire of the genocide.
